Another 60 Nautical Miles

I'm starting at the end, the picture below is sunset on the North River. Ironic isn't it here we are heading south and we're anchored in the North River.

O.K. Back to the begining - we rose (I rose) early at 6:00 am they got up at 7:00am and we cast off at 8:15 am. After much debate and number crunching we have decided that the Dismal Swamp is a no go so we are taking the alternate route The Virginia Cut. We and everybody else judging by the number of boats ahead of us. Before we left I took a few pictures of the Marina, the shot below is across the river where they are refitting a couple of warships! What a racket!

Batteries keep running out! So much to look at, so much happening - damm. The first bridge oporator described the 12 boats heading south as a Parade, I thought that was quite appropriate. Here we are at the first bridge.

This is the Gilmerton Bascule Bridge - Bascule is a bridge that is raised as you see in the picture. Next was our first lock, believe it or not we only dropped about a foot! We were here at 10:30, boy that was easy.

There must be an Airforce Base around here because there are all kinds of jets flying around - its like we have our very own escort of F18's or whatever they are, think we also saw the new Stealth Fighters too. At 12:15 we saw another Bald Eagle.

Interesting - at the Norfolk end of the journey there was very little wildlife but as we got further south happily we began to see more. Herons more Bald Eagles and Tree Swallows, lots of them. So back to the end at 5:45 we anchored (getting quite good at it) and now its time for supper. TTFN.

  1. I wonder if those are the garbage new warships that the US bought that have been starting to rust because of poor design (something about not having a device that prevents corrosion)

I'm jealous that you get to see all these planes :)

    Keep safe
